Website Switchover

OK what are peoples' opinions on when this is feasible.

I have a few relatively minor things to tweak on this site but apart from that it's all done. Performance issues do not seem to be a problem anymore, and since it's easier not to transplant things over to the new server I would recommend we leave it here for the time being.

So... when shall we start using the new site?

I still have had no contact from Affie despite Gloom's best efforts, so this is what I propose.

1) Someone gives me the FTP account.
2) I back up the old site's database and files, then remove the files.
3) Replace the files with a redirection HTML script which sends people here.

More ideally:

1) Someone gives me the FTP account.

3) Affie redirects clownguild.com to point at the IP address of this server so no clunky HTML is involved.

I am ready to do this any time right now so all I need is opinions. Assuming I can get the FTP account (which I'm not sure anyone knows) I propose doing this midday on Sunday when it's traditionally quite quiet and when I'll have plenty of time to do it.

Comments and info gratefully received.

Bear in mind that it doesn't really matter what domain points to what server at the end of the day. You could use both clownguild.org and clownguild.com and it would have the exact same pages come up.

Or alternetly we could have done it at CLOWN o' clock last wensday. Either one is fine with me really...

Anyho....seems like a good time to get the sites switched! Everything looks great and seems to be working in some way or another Razz

BTW....we might want to post the change on the clownguild.com site, so people will know what will happen.

The plan so far:

1) Get the FTP account details from Affie. Even Gloom is finding that hard! Very Happy

2) Make a general announcement saying this website is now live. Get everyone to post new stuff here. Give people time to back up their private messages etc from the old site.
3) About a week later take a final backup of clownguild.com's files and database. Hopefully this will be enough time for everyone to back up their stuff.
4a) Upload a redirection script which means visitors to clownguild.com get redirected to clownguild.org.
OR
4b) Have clownguild.com's DNS settings changed to point to clownguild.org's servers (better but dependant on Lord Affie doing something!).

In the future then we can choose what server to host the data on but the change will be seamless to users of clownguild.org/.com. I don't know much about the original server to really comment on this until I've had a discussion with Affie.
