Downtime

The irregular downtime of the website we've had later this afternoon is mainly because the SMTP mailing program I love to hate (Mercury/32) keeps crashing on me and for some reason Apache and MySQL join it in a sympathy strike when it does.

Tonight I'm going to reinstall the stupid thing and make sure everything's fine before restarting the server. Most of the evening it should work but there may be about 10 minutes downtime while I'm restarting and emails from the website won't be sent for a while (this has been the case since moving, unfortunately, as Mercury/32 is a pain to configure and I know that some people have as a result had problems registering etc).

It's hosted on Windows???? No wonder there are so many problems Sad

No matter what you think of Linux, it's proven vastly more reliable..over and over.
Even microsoft doesn't use thier own OS for web hosting...

Not that getting decent hosting would help with the mail server - they are a pain to configure on any system Wink

The old server was a managed server hosted by 1&1, and was a Linux box.

This new one is a Windows Server 2003-based Virtual Private Server hosted by SolarVPS and run by me. The only thing to go down so far has been the email, unfortunately it has a habit of taking stuff with it for some reason.

Think it's fixed now though.
