We seem to have varying performance on this site.

The site is hosted on a shared server and uses a shared database server with other sites hosted by my hosting company. I have a feeling this DB server is causing the performance bottlenecks. It was pretty quick on Sunday midday but this morning has become slower again; I reckon because some other websites are experiencing more visitors.

In the short term there's not much we can do about this except turn off non-essential database accessing functions. I'm going to be tweaking things to see which functions use the most database queries. I'm also going to contact my host and see if there's anything they can do to help which won't cost an arm and a leg to achieve.

In the long term I could look into dedicated hosting which would give us more performance (but would cost me more). It's also possible that my webhost will notice the performance issues and do some load balancing on the server which will increase performance too.

Anyway your general comments about the speed/responsiveness of different parts of the site would be useful for debugging purposes.

The other option of course is to move this entire new site to the old servers but Lord Affie is being a bit sluggish getting in touch with me so I have absolutely no idea about the details of the old site; where it's hosted, what the account details are, who pays etc...

Im 100% sure we could move it all to the old servers once we are done with the tweaks of this site

The old server is payed by Lord Affie (and the .com domain as well - all with funds from helpful lunies - paypal link)

Faster loading FTW!

Have played with some settings.

Disabling various site functions makes a difference but not a huge difference, and pages can still take an age to load. I suspect the database server is the problem. I've contacted my host and we'll see what they say.

In the meantime please bear in mind we're still in the testing phase so please don't use this website for anything too important! Thanks

We're now on a different database server for the time being. Some improvement but not as much as I'd hoped.

Site is now MUCH faster. Webhost have obviously configured the DB server properly at last
