Hi all,
Over the last month or two I have been experiencing server performance problems (drop-outs loading pages, "the connection timed out", "connection reset" - that sort of thing). I'm wondering what others' experiences have been like.
I'm considering moving hosting supplier. This would save me £20 a month (the Pound-Dollar exchange rate is not so good at the moment, and I pay in dollars) plus provide a better-spec server (on paper anyway), plus it would mean a complete rebuild and I would lose a lot of the cruft on my existing server. I will probably be moving to IIS from Apache (yeah I know, Microsoft, but Apache has been truly horrible for me) and maybe a separate database server.
Anyway if you guys are having problems let me know as it will motivate me to move
- Ade

What cruft would you loose.... will it cause you balance issues?
I have no issues with the site, other than a few of the more esoteric members.
If you want to move though mate go for it, £20 a month buys a lot of soup!

I think various upgrades of PHP, MySQL and Apache have left a lot of cruft. For better or for worse I use an all-in-one package which provides all of these and makes it easier to configure, but on the new server I will install PHP seperately, so hopefully can tweak it better to our needs. Should fix the longrunning email issues too as I might be able to have a seperate mail server, and possibly won't need MySQL installed as I can put the databases on a seperate database server.
That said, at the moment I'm with a small US-based company who provide exemplary support and I am generally really happy with them. They're just proving too expensive and since I really need to rebuild the server anyway I figure it would be a good opportunity to move. The downside is the potential new host is 1&1 who have a bad reputation for overloading their servers (pile it high, sell it cheap), although this is more on their shared hosting packages rather than their virtual private servers.
